Harvesting

We had such lovely weather this summer we got at least one bounty of tomatoes. Finally! This week we picked them, boiled them and then set them in ice for a few moments to peel off the skins. We then canned a couple jars of whole tomatos. We also made and canned some tomato sauce with herbs from our garden and garlic . . . from the store. I have to say I love to see my kids delight in these activities. I let them watch cartoons and wrestle and give them candies and treats, which they love, (well not so much the cartoons) but it's these times that they really seem to come alive with focus and patience and pride and curiosity. It definitely makes me daydream of living on a farm sometimes.

PS do you notice all that sunshine? It has been absolutely beautiful here lately. Still in the 70's!

  1. Love the photos! There's something beautiful about growing your own food and harvest it (instead of buying it from the supermarket).

  2. This looks so lovely. Although I'm not much for/in the kitchen, it makes me wish I had a garden to grow such loveliness in.

  3. Oh, freshly picked tomatoes. In the summer I eat so many tomatoes, sliced with salt and olive oil. I love how much sunshine is streaming in through your photos, too. It's so good of you to share these activities with your kids! These are the kinds of things they'll remember later in life whenever they eat tomatoes. :)

    1. I know sooo much sunshine, I obviously wasn't prepared for it and neglected to change my settings on the camera. They were really picky eaters for awhile but once I started having them help me in the kitchen it changed everything. And once we grew some veggies of own, they are now the first things eaten at meal times. Crazy!

  4. I first saw the photograph and thought it was tomato jam! Although, fresh tomato sauce is just as good. But lately, I've had a craving for some tomato jam but haven't had the time to make it!
