I really, really love vintage wallpaper. I hit a few estate sales this weekend and I came to the conclusion that the houses that have vintage wallpaper always have the best items. I feel that rooms covered in old wallpaper seem to tell a story. I think there is both a boldness and a delicacy to vintage wallpaper that makes me think the person who put it up must have had the same qualities to them and I can get lost in imagining their life and world. (This could also be due to the recent rifflings of persons collections of items acquired over their lifetime in my estate sale adventures). Though, I am sure a writer could make up an entire novel inspired by one room and the wallpaper pasted to its walls.

What do you think about vintage wallpaper?

  1. I'm lucky that I get to spend some time trawling through vintage wallpaper for my job so I loved this post! I actually framed a sample of the William Morris Pomegranate wallpaper in the 3rd picture!

  3. I love them, because they remind me of childhood and are really naive and sweet. I wouldn't use them now, but if I saw a beautiful pattern, I'd be tempted to frame it. x

  4. I really love the look of vintage wallpaper especially No 7&8 but have a hard time imagining it in my home. Maybe if I ever find a great roll of vintage wallpaper I could use it to line some shelves or drawers...

  5. I'm with Nina, I love the look of vintage floral wallpaper but I don't think it's an aesthetic I'd want to live with all the time. I have always wanted a tiny powder room under the stairs with a dark floral wallpaper, for some reason though, haha. There is a ton of new construction happening in my neighborhood, and when they knock down old homes we get to see the layers of wallpaper against the exposed brick walls, and I always go all romantic storyteller on it, imagining the stories that wallpaper has in it. So sweet!

  8. I've always preferred a white wall to any kind of wallpaper. But I agree that a vintage wallpaper gives seems to tell a story.

  9. If only those walls.. or paper could talk!

A huge fan of vintage :) Wallpaper can add so much to a room.. warmth, texture, color. The West coast tends to not have as much wall paper. I do like it and have started using it in smaller spaces.

Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog this morning. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and I'll look forward to receiving your posts via email!

  10. I have always loved vintage wallpaper--it's almost more beautiful when it's peeling and revealing layers of other wallpapers beneath it. That top image is just gorgeous--love the way it blends with those watercolors. I would love to paper my closet with vintage wallpaper, I think you may have inspired me to start looking for the right paper.

  11. I too love the detail of vintage wallpaper! Although, I love even more the thought of a writer composing an entire story based on the secrets within these gorgeous patterns!
