Process of Elimination

Friday, April 12, 2013

Okay friends, this is probably the post that is going to be most difficult for me to press that "publish" button because, oh I don't know why, deep rooted insecurities I guess. But let's pretend I don't have any for a moment. And what good is a blog if you can't poll your friends once in awhile? Especially those people that are design and font lovers and have gone through the grueling process of creating your own logos. So I have been working (and reworking) logo designs and I am in that space where I have been doing it so much I don't even know what I think anymore. I loved all your input on the font styles that you liked and I have used most of them here. And now I am back to ask for your input one more time so that I might press forward with working on a design or two, and hopefully do a little eliminating. I can say just by putting this image up there is one (maybe two) that I am already sure I don't want to use.

Over the last week I have found more than ever that designing a logo that you hope to keep is no easy task. I think doing it for yourself is even more difficult. At least for me keeping myself, my aesthetic, my product and future products as the designing force behind something that I hope to keep simple, representative and workable for all types of products that it will be used for (business cards, labels, stickers, websites, etc.), my brain starts to feel like it wants to explode, or maybe take a long nap. I am going to go for the latter and let it take a little rest and ask for your vote. I should mention the colors at this point are just "stand-ins" I haven't gotten close to the finalization phase at all. I was hoping to be in that phase a few days ago. As is I am more in the overall mood and desperately wanting to move forward in one direction phase. So if you like design one with font five . . . that's where I am at.

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend! Hopefully by next week I will be done with this little project and can check it off my to-do list.  Of course it's more likely I will have six more logo designs to add to my list.

  1. I like what's going on in No. 1 and 2. Those two have a quality of softness that I like.

But maybe the colour in No. 2 needs to be just slightly darker. And I would love to see the word 'handcrafted' with capitals and the same font as the word in No. 1. And maybe the font of the word 'plumed' less bold?

I hope I didn't ruin your day, haha. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. thank you lisa! i agree about the font, i much prefer the all caps, it works so much better. i will try plumed in one a bit lighter, i kept going back on forth on that too. and, no, you didn't ruin my day at all! i think i was insecure because i was afraid no one would give me the criticism to say "that's not working" and that's exactly what i need, it's just as important as hearing "this is working" when doing something like this. so i so appreciate it, you've actually made my day : )

  2. I like 1 & 2 too. I can quickly eliminate 3. Even though I tend towards real minimal stuff, it just doesn't "feel" like you. And I agree about the capitals. Either all or nothing on "handcrafted.

I also like #6. That feels minimal to me too. A little different from the others. Those three are my favorites. I envy you your ability to do this. I'd LOVE a logo!

Good luck, girlie! Can't wait to see the finished result!

    1. agh, i keep going back and forth on three! part of me thinks it's something i could live with for a long time because it's so simple, it wouldn't bug me after awhile, so in some ways that is me. but yeah, i know what you are saying too. 6 might be the best middle ground. and one, i liked that one right away too and i still do but the commitment just isn't there yet. oh! hopefully i will be sharing my final logo next week. cross your fingers! and thank you sooo much for your honest feedback xoxoxo!!!

  3. I think you have been struggling because they are ALL fab! I am not sure if this is going to be helpful (as the previous 2 comments chose 1 and 2) but I really love 5 and 6 – my initial choice was 5 but then I really looked at 6 and thought it was lovely too. I hope that doesn’t confuse you even more!

    1. oh my gosh thank you meghan, you are too nice! all this input is so incredibly helpful. the more i look at 6 the more i like it too . . .

  4. I'm torn between no 3 and 5 (without the year)... I guess the triangle logo is very, very appealing to me, because of its abstract shape (which is like the next level in design, a level of restrained refinement). But I also like no 5 (which I already know from the side bar) because it has the same streamlined feel and a very appealing organic shape.
PS: Decisions, decisions... it's easy to do it for someone else, it's virtually impossible to do for yourself. I've been working in an advertising agency for the past 10 years and we were never able to design our own logo. Each time we needed a change, after long internal struggles, we just asked a designer friend to do it for us :))))

    1. restrained refinement, i like that! that's what i want and i think why the more i look at them the more i am leaning towards the more simple, edited down versions. that's what they say right, edit, edit, edit. and your opinion with your background, thank you! #3 is climbing into the finals.

  5. LOVE #6, but replace the est. 2011 with the handcrafted in #3. Perfecto.

    1. i will try that, thank you! the most consistent feedback that i have gotten is to keep the 'handcrafted' over the date. i am not going to argue with the masses, i think you are right :)

  6. I love them, you have such an amazing eye for design. But I love, LOve, LOVE number 6.

    Cheers.
    Happy Weekend.

    1. thank you! #6 is growing on me the more i look at it. i think the simplicity of it is a good thing.

  7. Well, I'm picking one that no one picked, #4. (Coming in at a very close second, #1). Here's my reasoning. The font used for "Plumed" looks hand lettered (i.e., handmade) and whimsical, which is what I think of when I see your pillows. The font used for "Handcrafted" is modern and clean, which is what I think of when it comes to your design aesthetic (i.e., the interiors and products you share with us and love). Plus, logos #1 and #4 are easily and clearly readable. Both fonts both have a nice weight to them, but don't compete against each other; They complement each other. I love either feather that you illustrated. Ugh, good luck! I hope polling us has been some help to you. Given all these opinions, I think the one that finally sticks is the one that feels right to you in your gut and heart.

    1. #4 is the one that i immediately thought "that's not it" when i put this photo up. i liked it and i really do like the font for all the reasons you mention but i think the feathers feel too crafty and maybe too busy? i think it's the one i would grow tired of the fastest. but how you describe it all, that's what i am going for . . . i am going to have some thinking to do here ; )

  8. Ok, I like 1, 2, and 6. But the kerning in #6 is a little strange; the P & l are close enough together, but there's a lot of space between u & m & e. Oh shoot, I also like #3. I'm no help at all.

    1. i totally agree about #6 and that something i would fix for sure, it's how the font is and it's the first thing i see when i look at so it might throwing off my love for it a little bit. that seems to be a contender so i will fix that and see how i like it ;)

  9. I like 4 but the color of 5. I think I only don't like 5 because the est 2011 seems to unbalanced it... if that makes sense.

    1. yes, i agree with that too. it's just too much to take in with the date on there as well. totally makes sense! thanks!!

  10. I really really really like #3. For some reason when I think of how you write and your personality...which I love...#3 just fits!!!

  11. I like the elements of 3 and 4, and I like the simple design of 1, and the color of 2. I can't decide which one my favorite is!

  12. I think I am leaning towards #6. I would especially love it if the P andL were more evenly spaced :) But I also love #1 and can imagine it looking beautiful in so many different colors. Can't wait to see the lucky winner!!
    xoxoxox PB.

  13. The great thing about this post is that they are all lovely! The bad thing about this post is figuring out which one is best! I really adore 1, 5, and 6. But that's just me :) So far, I really like the direction that you are going. It is not a complete change, but mot like an evolution, and I love that.

There must be something going on with the moons to inspire you and I to get in the re-vamping mood this time of year! I hope you narrow it down to whatever feels the absolute best for you!

  14. Oh this is a toughie. They are all so great. I'm going with 3- because it wasn't until I got there that I realized that "handcrafted" was a part of it. And 6- I like how crisp the font is, the feather element and I'm always a sucker for knowing when something has been established. Hope you are enjoying your weekend thus far!

  15. I love them all. I'm leaning more towards #5 but the font on #6 is fab. It's so hard to pick just one! I'm impressed you came up with this many distinct choices. Whenever I tried to make a logo it always looked exactly the same but with different colors, haha. I love seeing a sneak peek into your creative process!

  16. I am really torn between #1,#3 and #6. The last one was the one I gravitated first before reading your post because it is so light and airy. Number two is great because you pick up the triangles (stylized feather?) from your blog header. Argh, it's so hard to choose a favorite because they all look fab.

  17. I like 1 & 4. 6 is OK, but I like the fonts on 1 & 4.

  19. Oh man, I think I like ALL of them. Let's see.. I like the design on 5 but really like the font on 4 the best. Have you decided yet??
