An Ode to Summer

Friday, June 14, 2013

My oldest has his last day of school today! For me that marks the true start of summer. I have been thinking about an ode to summer post but I see the wonderful people at Kinfolk have done so in (of course) the most charming and lovely way possible. This is why I love summer. Not because I ever make a to-go sandwich quite so prettily wrapped in brown paper and bakers twine. Not because I have ever once looked that cute riding a bike or climbing up a rocky steep in a bikini, but because I still get that feeling in the summertime that this video so wonderfully evokes. I have years of those feelings in memory bank from all the summers I have enjoyed which makes me look forward to the warmer days all year long. I love the sound of gravel and dried grass under my feet. I love the sound it makes when you brush your hand against strands of wheat and the sound it makes when the wind is lightly blowing it. It's almost like paper. Almost like the ocean. Almost like wings. But whatever it sounds like it is definitely the sound of summer. I love the summer nights when your face is still flushed from the day, and even though it's still warm outside, your chilled because the sun was so hot on your skin all through the day. I love the smell of a campfire and the scent of a day spent at the pool on my towels. I am excited for the slowed down long days and I am hoping to make the most of every one of them. What are you looking forward to most this summer?

  1. This was so beautifully written. Now I feel like a jerk for admitting the thing I'm looking forward to most about summer is the end of it. East coast summers are brutal. Congrats to F on another year over! xo

  2. I completely know what you mean by the feeling that summer brings. There is something special about summer, and as much as I love winter and revel in every cold day, there is something about summer that is so carefree and relaxed and completely enjoyable. Sense of smell is one of the strongest triggers of memories and I can totally smell a pool-side towel right now.

  3. It's been raining cats and dogs for the past 3 weeks, so much so, that I was beginning to forget what it was like to see the sun. And then I came and read your eloquent words. I wish I could record them and play it back to myself so I can imagine all of those things. Your writing is so beautiful, and it evokes the sense of summer so beautifully. I almost felt like it was summer again. I don't know what it is about the warmer months, but it almost makes me feel like a kid again, you know? Or maybe it's because I grew up in a warm country, so it automatically evokes images from my childhood.

You know what your post makes me do? It makes me get up, and want to go on a road trip across the United States.

    Seriously, PLEASE write a book!!

  6. I could close my eyes and listen to your description of summer all day! I could practically feel the sun on my face (which is nonsense of course because there is no sun in London today...again). My favourite part of summer is waking up early morning when the light is just right and there is both warmth and chilliness to the morning air. It's fresh and crisp but filled with possibilities for the day ahead. Ok, enough philosophyng and back to work for me. x
