Kids Room B+W

One room in my house that I need to put on my makeover list is M+L's room. It's not terrible but they will be 5 the end of next month (sniff sniff) and I have done nothing with their room since I was pregnant besides replace cribs with beds. It's time or at least getting time to start planning this project.

I am thinking for going for a simple monochromatic color palette. For one it limits my choices. This is a positive thing for me. Part of the reason I haven't changed it is my constant "oh! that's cute" or "oooo, maybe i should do that." Every style. And every time I visit this topic I find a design I would love to use as inspiration. But one thing I have consistently liked for their room is a chalkboard wall (I like the half-wall in the last photo). The other thing about a black and white kids room that I like is that it can be done for pretty inexpensive. You don't need to have a ton of decor for an impact or overall feeling of being designed. In fact less is more which I think is great for a kids room because it will inevitably be filled daily with more . . . toys. One of my wishlist DIY projects is to have fabric made with their drawings to make duvet covers. How stinking cute would that be? Unfortunately will still need to work on the drawing (and writing too). But that's another topic of my decision to keep them home rather than starting kindergarten this coming fall. One more year home with me. Yes, please. And thank you.

  2. Great ideas and lots of inspiration! I can't really pick a favorite but if I had to the winner would be the house headboard, that is just so adorable. And I like the photo where the art is placed in a child friendly height.

  3. I have things to say. First of all. We "redshirted" Cal for kindergarten. His birthday is in early September, and it just made sense for him to wait a year. Boys mature more slowly all along the path, and we figure it'll always be to his advantage to be one of the older kids rather than one of the younger ones.

    End/soap box

I love the black and white idea. That'll help focus your thoughts and be both calming and inspiring for them. Cal had a wide, room long, chair rail of magnetic paint in his room for ages. He loved it. Can't wait to see what you end up with!

    1. good to know! i am glad you got on your soap box. there was really no question for me as this summer approached. i just could NOT imagine them in school this fall. but apparently after i made this decision i realized there is a lot of debate about it. though, everyone that knows them and me agrees with my decision.

m+l will have just turned 5 when school starts. in fact if they were born on their due date (they were three weeks early) they would have to wait anyway. also they are the teeniest tiniest of little guys. people often guess their age as 3. their speech was delayed and they were in speech therapy until this june. so i am good with it. the only thing i feel bad about is when they turn 18 they will be getting ready for their senior year! eek! but i am flexible so if it's a huge issue for them at that point we can cross that bridge when we get to it ;) xoxoxo

  4. So there's this great black and white rug at Pattern Society that I really want for my living room. Do you think M+L and I can have that in common?

  5. The lil paw marks on the floor are .... ADORABLE! Bird house headboard .. insanely creative! And I am always a fan on drawing on walls (umm, as long as its erasable, of course!) ;)

  6. Here's something crazy...I've had that cloud bedding pinned in my bookmark folder for a year+. It comes in other colors and has loads of accessories if you're interested for the boys! https://the-pippa-and-ike-show.com/search.php
I think a chalkboard wall would be fantastic! xo

  7. i adore the black matte walls for little boys (or not so little boys :'[) room! fabrics with their drawings on it would be so lovely, have you ever thought of stitching their drawings onto fabric like you do for so many of your pillows?

  8. Oh yes. Love the inspiration from all of these images. Once we (eventually) move and have the kids' permanent rooms, love the idea of mostly black and white with pretty geometric prints and maybe tiny pops of color. Thanks for your well wishes too by the way Christine!!!

  9. I love this idea, when I was young my mom was constantly tired of me picking out new colors and designs for my room only to change my mind a few weeks later claiming my room was too "little kid". I think she would have fared better if she had stuff with a neutral palette,

    Good luck with your update.
    Cheers.

  10. Wonderful selection of inspiration images Christine! I don't know much about decorating kids rooms but I think you are onto something here. I LOVE the idea of creating bedding/fabric out of their drawings! And having a monochromatic scheme is so flexible. Those paw prints on the floor... adorable! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  11. I love the black and white concept and that tree wallpaper is so adorable {and seems like it would be pretty easy to keep clean too}! I've been wanting to paint something black chalkboard lately, so am looking forward to seeing what you do.

  12. I love this post! I love the added black and white ideas on the recent post too. I made a pattern a while back on Spoonflower that I'd love to use in a baby room, and I just love the chalk board wall to use with it. Thanks for sharing!!
