The Lounge Chair

As I mentioned about a week ago one of my goals for 2014 is to find a chair for my living room. There are so many chairs to love and so many fabulous designers. These are just a few of my favorite designers, honestly this round up could have been 100 times as long as it is. As you can see I have a particular style in mind - 1950's/1960's danish modern, but that doesn't mean I am not open. Or at least I like to think I am open until I start doing a round up like this and then I realize maybe not so much. I don't have a large space so I want something that doesn't take up a large footprint in my living room, again one of the many reasons I love these styles. I also love the clean lines and the fact that they are comfortable for being on the smaller side. And I have no idea why I don't have more blue/green/mustard yellow/orange in my house (which is none) because whenever I look at chairs and sofas it's those colors that I am drawn to most. But being a not-big-on-color person I think a large pop of it is what really does it for me.

But in my search I am going to try to be open because if you look into the prices on any of these you can see they are spendy. Like I have never bought a car that cost as much as some of these chairs do. Hence the year-long goal to look and keep my eyes peeled for a very likely reproduction of something similar found off of craigslist or at an estate sale. And I don't want to go and jinx myself, but I have a pretty good track record of wishing on finding a particular item, like my fake fireplace, in which I wished literally two days prior to finding it for one dollar that I could have one of my very own, and suddenly finding it right there in front of me. I am crossing my fingers I will have the same luck with this, a very good price being apart of that luck. And speaking of jinxing myself, I also recently talked about I have been so healthy lately and not having been very sick at all in the last year - well, I think that lucky streak might be coming to an end. My head and shoulders are achy and the throat has a bit of a tickle. So if I am not back here tomorrow it means I have indeed become a victim of the cold and flu season and I am probably now in the throes of a dance moms marathon, having a perfectly good excuse to do such a thing.

    1. yes, i am trying to remind myself that finding something comfortable and cosy enough to curl up with a book needs to be at the top of my criteria list. i think my favorite on this list is the illum wikkelso, but it might be wishful thinking that i could find anything like that ;)

  2. stahp! these are all so gorgeous. i am particularly fond of that milo one on the bottom. those legs! is this what it feels like to be a guy eyeing a good looking girl? it's funny you are in the market for something like this. we recently acquired a petite mid century chair, not in the best condition, but worth it to us. but in the process, we had to pass up an orange eames lounge chair :( we are just not in the market for something like that right now, but it would have been so nice to be able to take that baby home! good luck in your search and i hope a chair finds you.

  3. Mmm mid-century modern! So delicious. I don't know if you're sticking solely to originals or more authentic repros, but Urban Outfitters has a surprising amount of similar chairs for a lot less money: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=25927534&parentid=A_FURN_FURNITURE

Of course, you could always hit up estate sales and Craigslist if you want something made in that era and not this year ;) Good luck in your search, twinsy! I know how frustrating it is to know exactly what you want but to not be able to find it. xo

    1. you are like a human bookmark yo ;) i really like that second one and the price too (249!) i almost looked there last night as i was rounding up but i decided to keep it o.g. - but, yeah, this is definitely more my price point. in fact maybe cheaper than the inflated and insane prices on portland's craigslist.

  4. Didn't you have luck like that with your car too? I need some of your juju. I'm searching for a black steamer trunk to use as a coffee table and you'd think those would be thick on the ground, but no...

Anyhoo, these are all gorgeous, because, duh. I will say that I'm drawn to the ones with more upholstery simply for the curl-up-and-read-in factor, but that might not be quite what you're looking for. And in regards to the idea of reproduction vs. authentic, I almost always lean repro because authentic just feels so precious to me, you know? And kids and dogs. Maybe someday. Good luck. The search is half the fun!

    1. i did have pretty good luck with my car, but that was brutal! luckily i don't NEED a chair and i can take a leisurely pace with my search. and yes, getting something that is a craigslist/estate sale find is so fun because you can try try try to find it for a steal of a deal, and like you said you don't have to worry about breaking it in, that parts been done for you ;) AND if you don't love it in a few years you can pass it along.

    1. oh i love the upholstery on that one! i think it has been reupholstered but i am not 100%, i might use it as inspiration someday if i ever get enough courage to try my hand at upholstery.

  6. I love the Adrian Pearsall, funny how everyone always thinks neutral tones when it comes to certain things like coats and furniture but if you are drawn to these colors you should add them to your life. Oh boy I hope you are not getting a cold. And thanks for stopping back. I had a weird issue with one post the blogger brunch in which the comments just closed. I had to add the post up again. Not sure if it a template coding issue or WP maybe I did something. I switched to WP and one of the reasons is blogger keeps adding that taupe/beige background to all white/transparent areas. It is really annoying and no one knows why.

    1. oh! you are right about the background! i thought i was crazy because it didn't always do that, right? mine is kind of a pinkish or bluish taupe color, i really can't decide but i did decide that it's really annoying.

  7. I love these collection of vintage looking chairs, especially the Milo Baughman one! I think a pop of color is very classy, and keeps a room looking sophisticated. Good luck on your hunt for the perfect chair this way! And I hope you most certainly don't come down with a nasty cold or the flu! Cheers!!

  8. it is always hard for me to pull the trigger on a chair because they cost as much as a couch. I love those winged back chairs but I could change my mind about it later lol. :)

Ugh getting sick the worst. I caught that flu that was going around at Christmas time. tea and cookies are your prescription

  9. I am wishing you good furniture finding juju. I really would like a big comfy reading chair for when I feel like pulling those three hour book marathons but I really can't justify it when my couch works just as well right now. Can I?

    1. my couch works too, but it's about all we have besides our poäng chair from ikea (doesn't everyone have one of those?), the problem is that nobody ever wants to sit in it ;) we could really use another comfortable seat in the house.

  10. Lounge chairs are great for entertaining, but they also have more a subtle use, in the nooks and crannies of rooms in big lay-outs, or in adorning and occupying smaller spaces with a flair.
