Magazine Display Hacks

Thursday, July 24, 2014

One of the things I haven't tackled yet in my seemingly never-ending house de-cluttering, is all of my magazines. I have so many and most (we're talking 90%) haven't even been cracked open yet. So every time I think about tossing them out I end up just shoving them back in their respective dust ridden resting places. At some point I don't know what kind of list I got on but I was getting at least 10 free subscriptions, everyday it seemed I'd get another magazine dropping through my slot. And, really, I would like to go through and look at them, but there are so many it's overwhelming. I saw a few of these pins and thought maybe if I found a way to display a few at a time I could actually start flipping through them. Though I am not completely confident on that, I do have one hanger on my bathroom that I have had an H&M catalog in since, well, I think it was a fall issue of last year (see why this cleaning spree is taking me so long?), and before that I think it was a vanity fair that hung there for about ten months before that. Really the only magazine I always read front to cover and love keeping a collection of is this one. One of my other long neglected goals is to submit something to them someday.

  1. J got me a subscription to French Elle Decoration for Christmas, and they are the prettiest magazines. It's the only one I get, and I'd love a way to show it off apart from the basket next to our sofa. Pinning a few of these ideas for later! xo

  2. I have things to say about IKEA but limited time and energy this week, so I'll just pop in to say that we're on similar wavelengths because I'm tackling magazines too. It's a little daunting. I have boxes and boxes of Martha Stewart Living from way back. I've been going through them in the evenings in front of the TV, tearing out interesting articles, inspiring photos and recipes, and discarding the rest. It's nice to see a pile diminish. But last night a girlfriend put out the call for old magazines for her daughter's summer project, so I'm just going to give them all to her. Done! It feels great. :)

  3. I have a little corner in the living room where I keep my Vogue magazines (Vogue Italia is the only one I read monthly) in two neat stacks with a framed editorial shot on each one of them, they are part of the decor. I used to collect Art & D├ęcoration magazines as well, until I had nowhere to keep them anymore and had to take them to my parent's country house - they proved to be very handy for the decoration of the house. And one other magazine I used to read monthly was Deutschland, a culture and business magazine in German - I subscribed to it to keep up with and exercise my German, but after they offered me a free subscription for a year I forgot to renew it and I miss it now. Thank you for reminding me about that. I like the idea in the third image and I also like the idea of magazines on a wooden ladder propped against the wall.

  4. Coat hangers! Why have I not thought of that before?! This is such a cheap yet cool display idea. It only works if you haven't got many magazines though and unfortunately I've got quite a collection. But I'm making note of this. Maybe I could display my favourites and get rid of the others :)

  6. You can do it! I believe in you. Look how much stuff you have already gotten rid of and you did a garage sale.

I am the exact same way. I tell myself I will use this item eventually and it is a waste to throw it away or I spent this much money on it and I still haven't used it. I think it's always good to keep purging but also remind yourself that these are just things and only keep the things you love. (Can you tell I'm nesting?)

Oh and I also love the hanger idea for a magazine rack but I think I might get sick of the idea once I had it up after awhile.

  7. Guilty as charged too. I'll read a K Mart catalogue that spams my post box before I'll read that magazine that I paid actual money for. Maybe if I could display them, I'd remember to find time to read them. To echo everyone else's sentiments, the hanger idea has my mind churning. It's a far better idea than having them stuffed in a basket near the front door (which is my current set-up).

  9. I am the exact same way - they're just piling up and I flip through them occasionally but I need to just sit down and READ. You know I'm totally going to renew the subscription when it's up too
